I have been asked about the process I had used when doing portraits. When I first starting out doing portraits, I would have the subject/subjects, in for sittings. This was an arduous task, especially with young children! I would use anything and everything to keep them entertained, including my poor parrot and puppies when they were around. But, I must say it was great experience and helped so much with being able to move some of the technique to photos when I started using them for reference. This example I am using is for a client that lived in South Carolina. The mom had definite ideas about how she wanted her triplets to be portrayed. I was to have the boy splashing his sisters. The photos displayed in the following images is just a portion of the tons of film I used (Oh so grateful for digital!!!) The children were running around in their backyard and I furiously ran after them, trying to gather as many body positions and facial expressions as I possibly could. The photos show the triplets in their play clothes. I was asked to put the girl in dresses and the boy in a coordinating outfit. With all the reference material I was ready to do my quick sketch using information from the trillions of photos. (I did have a photo of that, but can’t for the life of me find where I put it) I also did some research on clothing and steams and the rest of the scenery. I then would show the sketch for approval. Major changes could be made at this point. When the sketch was approved, I would continue on with the pastel, using the sketch as the ‘under painting’
So the result was the portrait shown.
